Allergies and Anaphylaxis

Allergies are one of the most common medical conditions worldwide, caused when the immune system becomes sensitive to a particular substance, or allergen, which should not usually cause harm - such as pollen, certain foods, dust mites, animal fur and insect bites. In this video we explain why allergies occur, common symptoms, how they are diagnosed and treated, and the most severe form of allergic reaction, called anaphylaxis, which is a medical emergency.

Dementia

Dementia leads to decline in cognitive function, and rates are increasing around the world as the global population ages. It describes a set of symptoms rather than a single disease, and has many causes. We describe the common symptoms, how it is diagnosed and the different types of dementia. We also cover how best to live with this challenging condition, and the steps we can take to either prevent it or slow its progression.

High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is one of the most common long term conditions worldwide. Yet many people with the condition do not know they have it, as it rarely causes symptoms. This is a problem, because, if undetected, it can lead to serious medical problems like strokes, heart attacks and kidney disease. We describe what blood pressure is, the risk factors for high blood pressure, and how this silent killer can be prevented and controlled through lifestyle changes and medication.

Cancer

Cancer is a very common group of conditions caused by uncontrolled cell growth. It is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and will affect most of us or our loved ones at some point in our lives. We explain how cancer occurs through mutation of the DNA, leading to unrestricted and abnormal cell growth. We also describe the common symptoms and the ways that cancer is detected and treated.

Klinefelter's Syndrome

Klinefelter's Syndrome is a common chromosome disorder. It is caused when boys are born with an extra X chromosome, which leads to low testosterone levels. We describe the common features of the condition and how it is diagnosed and treated. This video was sponsored by the Klinefelter's Syndrome Association UK.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis (joint inflammation), and it is an important cause of joint pain and disability worldwide, often related to ageing and 'wear and tear' of the joints. We explain who is most at risk, how it occurs, the common symptoms and how they can be managed.

Thyroid disorders

The thyroid gland is a small organ in our neck that makes thyroid hormones that influence our body's metabolism. We explain what happens when you have an overactive or underactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism), the symptoms, investigations, causes and treatments. This video was sponsored by the British Thyroid Foundation.

Migraines

Migraines are a very common type of headache that affect around 15% of people worldwide. Women are more commonly affected than men, and they can have a significant impact on daily life. We describe the symptoms, causes, triggers and ways it can be managed.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, known as IBS for short, is a very common gut condition that leads to tummy pain, bloating and diarrhea or constipation. In this video we explain the possible triggers, such as stress, and ways that it can be managed.

Heart Attacks / Heart Disease

Heart attacks are caused by heart disease, and are the leading cause of death worldwide. However this condition is also largely preventable, through leading a healthier lifestyle. We hope this video will raise awareness of what heart disease is and how to prevent it.

Asthma

Asthma is a long term breathing condition which results in episodic airway narrowing. It is very common, affecting around 5 percent of the global population. This video explains what asthma is, and how it can be managed.

How to do C.P.R

CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. We use CPR in emergency situations if someone is unconscious and  not breathing, as it can keep people alive until an ambulance arrives. If more people knew how to give CPR, many lives could be saved. This video was sponsored by the CHSS charity.

Turner Syndrome

Turner syndrome is a rare genetic condition that affects around 1 in every 2000 girls born. Girls with the condition are usually shorter than normal, and the production of hormones by the ovaries is also affected. With treatment, girls are able to live long and normal lives. This video was sponsored by the Turner Syndrome Support Society UK.
